Key Characteristics
Appearance: They have a pale yellow to white body, often with a subtle marbled pattern and pinkish-red eyes. The “bristles” (odontodes) that give them their name are fleshy tentacles around the mouth and on the head. These are much more pronounced in males, while females may only have small bristles around their mouth.
Size: Unlike the common pleco which can grow very large, the Brown Bristlenose Pleco is a manageable size, typically reaching 4 to 5 inches (10–13 cm) in length.
Temperament: Generally a peaceful species, they are an excellent addition to most community aquariums with non-aggressive tank mates. Males can be territorial toward other males, especially during breeding.
Lifespan: With proper care, they typically live for 5 to 8 years.
Varieties: Beyond the standard shortfin Brown, a selectively bred longfin variety is available, known for its flowing fins.
Habitat and Care
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 20 to 30 gallons is recommended. They thrive in environments with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, rocks, and driftwood, which also provides biofilm and surfaces for grazing.
Water Parameters: They are adaptable but prefer well-oxygenated water with temperatures between 22–28°C (73–81°F) and a pH range of 6.5–7.5.
Diet: While excellent algae grazers, their diet should be supplemented.
Primary Diet: High-quality sinking algae wafers or pellets, and blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber slices, or shelled peas.
Occasional Treats: Small amounts of protein-rich foods such as bloodworms can be offered sparingly.
Breeding
Brown Bristlenose Plecos are cave spawners and will often breed in home aquariums if conditions are met. The male will select a cave and guard the eggs until they hatch.
