Dwarf Pea Puffer (small)
Common Name: Dwarf Pea Puffer
Scientific Name: Carinotetraodon travancoricus
Genus: Carinotetraodon
Wild Origin: India, particularly the lakes, rivers, and slow-moving streams of Kerala and Karnataka
The Dwarf Pea Puffer is a tiny, highly charismatic freshwater puffer known for its big personality despite its small size. With its round body, expressive eyes, and golden-green coloration patterned with dark spots, it is one of the most distinctive nano fish in the hobby. Unlike many freshwater puffers, the Pea Puffer is fully freshwater and remains exceptionally small, making it suitable for nano aquariums—though it requires careful planning due to its inquisitive and occasionally nippy nature. Intelligent and interactive, it often watches movement outside the tank and learns to recognise its keeper. Best kept in species-only setups or with carefully chosen tankmates, the Dwarf Pea Puffer is a fascinating and rewarding fish for aquarists who appreciate unique behaviour and personality.

We Recommend:
These carefully selected options provide a well-balanced nutritional profile, ensuring that your fish receive the essential nutrients they need for optimal growth, vibrant colors, and overall health. By offering a variety of these high-quality foods, you can help maintain the vitality and well-being of your fish, promoting a healthy and thriving aquarium environment.
Behavior and Compatibility:
Dwarf Pea Puffers are curious, intelligent, and highly interactive fish with distinct personalities. Unlike many schooling species, they are not shoaling fish, but they do benefit from being kept in small groups where they can establish natural social dynamics—as long as the tank is spacious enough. Their behaviours include exploring every corner of the aquarium, inspecting decorations, and closely watching activity outside the glass.
Because they can be territorial and may nip at other fish, they are best kept in species-only setups or with very carefully chosen tank mates. Peaceful, slow-moving, or long-finned fish are not recommended, as Pea Puffers may harass them. Some keepers successfully house them with fast-moving, non-fin-nipped species or larger snails, but caution and monitoring are essential. They coexist well with shrimp only if the shrimp colony is established and large, as puffers may prey on smaller individuals. Providing plenty of plants, caves, and visual barriers helps reduce aggression and encourages more natural, confident behavior.
