The Begonia amphioxus is a rare and unique species of begonia native to Borneo, prized by collectors for its distinctive foliage. Its name, derived from the Greek “amphi” (on both sides) and “oxys” (pointed), refers to its leaves which are lance-shaped and pointed at both ends.
The plant features narrow, bright green leaves adorned with prominent scarlet or maroon red polka dots and a red border. It grows as a compact, shrub-like subshrub, typically reaching a height of 30-40 cm (12-16 inches). In its native habitat, it is found growing on moss cushions on steep limestone cliffs in partial shade.
While the plant can produce small, green or pale pink flowers, it is primarily cultivated for its striking foliage. Its unusual appearance often leads to nicknames like “Polka Dot Begonia” or “Spotted Lance Begonia”.
Care Requirements
Light: Requires bright, indirect, or filtered light. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure the potting mix is well-draining to prevent root rot.
Humidity: High humidity is crucial for this species, ideally between 60-80% or higher. It is often recommended for terrariums or enclosed containers to maintain the necessary moisture levels.
Temperature: Prefers warm, stable temperatures, ideally between 18–26°C (65–80°F). It is sensitive to cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Soil: Use a very well-draining, airy mix, such as a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of peat or coir.
Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every few weeks during the spring and summer growing season.
Note: This plant is considered potentially toxic if ingested, so keep it out of reach of pets and small children. It can also be a bit dramatic and drop leaves when adjusting to a new environment or if handled roughly.
