Julidochromis
Commonly known as “Julies”
Julidochromis are a graceful and captivating group of cichlids native to the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Known for their elongated, torpedo-shaped bodies and striking horizontal banding, they bring both elegance and personality to African cichlid aquariums. Their movement is smooth, deliberate, and almost eel-like as they weave through rock crevices and caves—making them a beautiful showcase fish for natural rock aquascapes.
Despite being cichlids, Julies are generally peaceful and can coexist well with other mildly tempered Tanganyikan species, provided territories are respected. They are pair-forming fish that establish a small territory within rockwork, making caves, stacked stone, or slate structures essential to their environment.
