Leptodictyum riparium

Kneiff’s feathermoss is an undemanding, fast-growing moss for cold- as well as warm-water tanks. This is true Leptodictyum riparium, it is not the same as the upright-growing so-called “Stringy moss”. It is found in almost all the world, mainly in the temperate climate zone, and one of the most common water mosses in Germany. This species mostly occurs along flowing waters, above and below water, mostly on tree roots and rock. In its terrestrial form, it develops a flat mat, often with spore capsules. Its submerged shoots grow horizontally, or rather, in all directions, like those of Java moss. Their rhizoids cling to solid matter. The moss is often pearling with many silvery oxygen bubbles hanging between the leaflets.

The Streamside Leptodictyum moss, also known as Amblystegium riparium, is undemanding, however it is most vigorous in nutrient-rich, rather cool water, with not too dim light. CO2 addition is not essential but strongly promotes its growth. High carbonate hardness is tolerated. The moss is best fastened to objects such as wood or stones and can be kept in check by occasional trimming. Leptodictyum riparium grows well emersed on surfaces that are kept moist.
