Microsorum Pteropus, commonly known as Java Fern, is a classic aquarium plant in the planted tank hobby. A fantastic choice for beginner aquarists, Java Fern has earned a reputation for being nearly bulletproof as it almost requires some effort to kill and will tolerate a wide range of aquarium conditions. Microsorum Pteropus is an epiphytic plant making it versatile with placement. This aquarium plant will happily grow attached to aquarium driftwood or when placed in the crevices of an aquascape layout. Its bright green, broad foliage is a great way to fill in areas lacking coverage. Like most aquarium plant species, Java Fern can be grown in low tech conditions, but the addition of CO2 injection will produce a noticeable difference in growth rate and appearance.
Microsorum Pteropus can be attached directly to driftwood, rocks, or any aquarium decoration using thread or glue. Make sure to keep the rhizomes above your substrate or the plant can begin to rot. Propagation is easy and straightforward; simply cut or pull apart rhizomes to be replanted/reattached.
