Horizon Labs Anubias Nano Super Petite – Limited Edition Tissue Culture

Anubias Nano Super Petite is an exceptionally compact Anubias variety prized for its extremely small leaves, dense growth and ability to add intricate detail to an aquascape. Its miniature proportions make it particularly well suited to nano aquariums, detailed hardscape layouts and areas where standard Anubias varieties would appear too large.

With its rich green foliage and naturally compact growth habit, Nano Super Petite can be used to create the appearance of mature vegetation on rocks, driftwood and other hardscape while maintaining a refined sense of scale.

This Limited Edition Horizon Labs specimen is supplied as a laboratory-grown tissue culture containing multiple young plantlets.

Plant Characteristics

Plant: Anubias Nano Super Petite
Type: Rhizome plant
Placement: Foreground / hardscape
Growth rate: Slow
Difficulty: Easy
Lighting: Low to moderate
CO₂: Not required, but beneficial
Propagation: Rhizome division
Attachment: Rock, driftwood and other aquarium hardscape
Aquascaping use: Nano aquariums, foreground detailing, rockwork, driftwood, crevices and miniature aquascapes

Appearance and Growth

The defining feature of Anubias Nano Super Petite is its exceptionally small foliage. The compact leaves grow closely around a creeping rhizome, eventually developing into dense miniature clusters.

Its small scale makes it particularly valuable for detailed aquascaping. It can be positioned between stones, along cracks in rockwork or attached to fine branches of driftwood to create a natural, established appearance.

Growth is slow, meaning the plant requires relatively little trimming and can maintain carefully designed compositions for long periods.

What is a Tissue Culture Plant?

Tissue culture, also known as in-vitro cultivation, is a laboratory propagation technique in which small pieces of plant tissue are grown under sterile, controlled conditions.

The plants develop inside a sealed container on a nutrient-rich culture medium. This allows numerous healthy young plants to be produced without exposure to many of the unwanted organisms commonly associated with conventionally cultivated aquarium plants.

Tissue cultures provide several important advantages:

Free from pest snails and their eggs

Produced without algae contamination under sterile conditions

No rockwool to remove

Multiple young plantlets per container

Excellent for shrimp and nano aquariums

Ideal for carefully controlled aquascapes

Easy to divide into numerous planting portions

Preparing Your Tissue Culture

Remove the plants carefully from the container and rinse away the nutrient gel using clean aquarium or dechlorinated water.

Gently separate the culture into smaller individual plants or groups. Take care not to unnecessarily damage the delicate roots or rhizomes.

A single tissue culture can be divided into multiple portions and distributed throughout the aquascape.

How to Plant Anubias Nano Super Petite

Unlike many aquarium plants, Anubias should not be planted deeply into the substrate.

Anubias grows from a horizontal structure called a rhizome. The roots extend downward from the rhizome while leaves grow upward from it.

The rhizome must remain exposed. If it is completely buried beneath aquasoil, gravel or sand, it may begin to rot.

For best results, attach individual portions directly to:

Aquarium rocks

Driftwood

Hardscape crevices

Small branches

Other suitable aquarium-safe surfaces

The plant can be gently wedged into a suitable crevice or attached using aquarium-safe cyanoacrylate gel or thread. Over time, the roots will naturally grip the hardscape.

Lighting and CO₂

Anubias Nano Super Petite is relatively undemanding and does not require intense lighting. Low to moderate light is generally sufficient.

Because Anubias grows slowly, excessively strong lighting without balanced CO₂ and nutrients can encourage algae to develop on its leaves.

Supplemental CO₂ is not required, making this plant suitable for low-tech planted aquariums. However, CO₂ and balanced fertilisation can encourage stronger, healthier growth.

Maintenance

Anubias Nano Super Petite requires very little maintenance once established.

Older or damaged leaves can be carefully removed close to the rhizome. Because the plant grows slowly, avoid unnecessary trimming of healthy leaves.

Good water circulation and balanced lighting are particularly beneficial for keeping the small leaves clean and reducing algae accumulation.

Propagation

As the plant matures, its rhizome gradually extends and produces additional leaves and roots.

Established rhizomes can eventually be divided into smaller sections, provided each section retains healthy leaves and roots. These sections can then be attached elsewhere in the aquarium.

Ideal for Detailed Aquascaping

The miniature scale of Anubias Nano Super Petite makes it particularly effective for creating a sense of depth and perspective. Placing very small-leaved plants around detailed hardscape can make rocks and driftwood appear larger and give an aquascape a more mature, natural appearance.

Horizon Labs Anubias Nano Super Petite Limited Edition Tissue Culture is an excellent choice for aquascapers seeking a rare-looking, exceptionally compact and easy-care Anubias for highly detailed planted aquariums, nano scapes and intricate hardscape compositions.
