Sphagnum Moss Compressed Brick – 100g
Sphagnum Moss is an exceptionally versatile natural growing medium valued for its outstanding moisture retention, aeration and ability to create humid growing conditions. Supplied as a convenient 100g compressed brick, the moss expands considerably once hydrated, providing a generous amount of material for terrariums, paludariums, propagation and specialist plant cultivation.
Its ability to hold significant amounts of moisture while still maintaining air spaces around plant roots makes sphagnum moss particularly useful for humidity-loving and sensitive terrestrial plants that require consistently moist conditions without sitting in dense, waterlogged soil.
Ideal for Terrariums
Sphagnum moss is an excellent addition to tropical and high-humidity terrariums. It can be incorporated into the substrate, placed beneath decorative layers or used around plants and hardscape to help maintain moisture.
It is particularly useful for:
Tropical planted terrariums
Closed and high-humidity terrariums
Bioactive setups
Moss and fern displays
Maintaining humid microclimates
Moisture-retaining substrate layers
Hardscape and background planting
Propagation areas
When incorporated into a terrarium substrate, sphagnum moss can help prevent the growing medium from drying too quickly while maintaining a loose structure around delicate root systems.
Excellent for Paludariums
Sphagnum moss is especially useful in the terrestrial and marginal sections of paludariums, where consistently humid conditions are required.
It can be positioned around rocks, wood and planting pockets above the waterline to retain moisture for terrestrial and emersed plants. It is also useful for creating naturally humid transitions between aquatic and terrestrial areas.
For plants growing on elevated hardscape, sphagnum can be placed around the roots to help maintain moisture where conventional substrate would be difficult to use.
Growing Sensitive and Specialist Plants
One of the greatest advantages of sphagnum moss is its suitability for plants with delicate or specialised root systems.
It is widely used as a growing or propagation medium for many moisture-loving plants, including:
Orchids: Excellent for maintaining moisture around delicate roots while still providing aeration.
Carnivorous plants: Sphagnum is commonly used with many moisture-loving carnivorous plants. Always check the requirements of the particular species and use suitably low-mineral water where required.
Ferns: Particularly useful for humidity-loving and miniature fern species.
Aroids: Can be used for propagation and root development of many tropical aroids.
Cuttings and propagations: The combination of moisture and aeration makes sphagnum particularly useful for encouraging root development.
Sensitive tropical plants: Excellent for plants that require consistently high humidity and carefully controlled moisture around their roots.
Excellent Moisture Retention
Sphagnum moss can absorb and retain a substantial amount of water relative to its dry weight. Instead of immediately allowing water to drain away, the fibres hold moisture and release it gradually.
This makes it particularly valuable in terrariums and propagation environments where maintaining stable humidity is important.
At the same time, its fibrous structure creates air spaces around the roots. This balance between moisture retention and aeration is one of the main reasons sphagnum moss is so widely used for sensitive plants.
How to Prepare
Place the required amount of compressed sphagnum moss into a clean container and add water.
Allow the moss sufficient time to fully absorb the water and expand. Once hydrated, gently separate and loosen the fibres by hand.
Before use, lightly squeeze out excess water. The moss should generally be evenly moist rather than dripping wet, unless the specific application requires otherwise.
The expanded moss can then be used directly or combined with other suitable substrate components.
Suggested Uses
Sphagnum Moss is suitable for a wide range of horticultural and vivarium applications, including:
Terrariums
Paludariums
Tropical plant displays
Orchid cultivation
Fern cultivation
Aroid propagation
Carnivorous plant setups where appropriate
Rooting plant cuttings
Maintaining humidity around sensitive plants
Creating moist planting pockets on hardscape
Substrate mixtures
Bioactive enclosures
Plant transport and temporary root protection
Important Growing Advice
Although sphagnum moss has excellent water-holding properties, it should not automatically be kept completely saturated. Different plants have different moisture requirements, and excessive water combined with insufficient airflow can contribute to root deterioration.
For sensitive plants, aim for the appropriate balance between moisture, humidity and airflow for the particular species being cultivated.
For species sensitive to dissolved minerals, such as many carnivorous plants, use RO, distilled or other appropriately low-mineral water rather than assuming ordinary tap water is suitable.
Storage
Store unused compressed moss in a cool, dry location away from excessive moisture. Once hydrated, use as required and avoid storing wet moss in a completely sealed environment for extended periods.
Sphagnum Moss Compressed Brick 100g is an extremely useful addition to any terrarium, paludarium or specialist plant-growing setup, providing excellent moisture retention, root aeration and versatility for everything from tropical displays to the cultivation and propagation of delicate plants.
