Product details

The Aponogeton madagascariensis var. henkelianus, commonly known as the Madagascar Lace Plant, is a true showstopper in the world of aquascaping. This plant is highly valued for its striking lace-like leaves that add a unique, ethereal beauty to any aquarium. Native to Madagascar, this rare aquatic plant is best suited for advanced aquarists due to its specific care requirements. Its open, netted leaves allow light and water to pass through, creating a mesmerizing effect that adds elegance and movement to the aquarium.

Key Features:

  • Lace-Like Leaves: The distinctive, lace-patterned leaves of Aponogeton madagascariensis are its most striking feature, making it a centerpiece in any aquascape.
  • Moderate Difficulty Level: This plant has specific requirements for lighting, nutrient levels, and water conditions, making it ideal for experienced aquarists who can provide consistent care.
  • Unique Focal Point: Due to its intricate leaf structure and striking visual impact, the Madagascar Lace Plant is often used as a focal point in medium to large aquariums.
  • Bulbous Root System: This plant grows from a bulb, which helps anchor it firmly in the substrate while providing it with the nutrients it needs for healthy growth.

Care Requirements:

  • Lighting: The Madagascar Lace Plant requires high lighting to maintain healthy growth and prevent its delicate leaves from deteriorating. Bright, consistent light is essential to help the plant maintain its vivid green coloration and intricate lace-like structure.
  • CO2: CO2 supplementation is recommended for optimal growth and to support the plant’s health, especially in aquariums with high light levels.
  • Water Parameters: This plant prefers stable water conditions with a pH range of 6.0-7.5 and temperatures between 20-26°C. Soft, slightly acidic water is ideal for promoting lush growth. Aponogeton madagascariensis also benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate, which helps support its extensive root system.
  • Dormancy Period: The Madagascar Lace Plant may enter a dormancy period where it loses its leaves. During this time, reduce lighting and fertilization, and allow the bulb to rest. Once dormancy is complete, the plant will begin to produce new leaves.

Planting Tips:

  • Plant the bulb of Aponogeton madagascariensis directly into a nutrient-rich substrate, leaving the top portion of the bulb exposed to prevent rotting.
  • Place the plant in an area with good water flow to ensure nutrients reach the leaves and to help keep the intricate leaf structure clean.
  • Avoid burying the bulb too deeply, and make sure the plant is placed where it has space to grow, as it can spread its lace-like leaves quite broadly.
