Product details

The Crinum calamistratum is an extraordinary aquatic plant known for its long, slender, and wavy dark green leaves that add a dramatic, flowing effect to aquascapes. Native to Central Africa, this unique bulb plant is perfect for creating an eye-catching focal point in medium to large aquariums. Its striking leaf structure brings a sense of movement to the aquascape, and its hardy nature makes it a popular choice among aquarists.

Key Features:

  • Long, Wavy Leaves: Crinum calamistratum is characterized by its long, ribbon-like leaves with a rippled texture. The wavy, dark green leaves can grow up to 1 meter in length, creating a beautiful, flowing effect in aquariums.
  • Ideal Focal Point: This plant grows in an arching, fountain-like manner, making it a natural centerpiece in aquascapes. Its tall leaves work well in both the midground and background of larger tanks.
  • Bulbous Growth: Growing from a bulb, this plant is rooted firmly in the substrate and can tolerate a range of water conditions, making it quite hardy.
  • Low Maintenance: It is well-suited for low to medium light conditions and does not require CO2 supplementation, making it ideal for low-tech setups.

Care Requirements:

  • Lighting: Crinum calamistratum grows well under low to medium lighting conditions. Too much direct light may encourage algae growth on its leaves, so indirect or moderate lighting is ideal.
  • CO2: This plant does not require CO2 supplementation but will benefit from it for enhanced growth. It grows well in both low-tech and high-tech setups.
  • Water Parameters: Crinum calamistratum is adaptable and can thrive in a wide pH range of 6.0-8.0 and temperatures between 20-28°C. It does best with nutrient-rich substrate to support its bulb and root growth.
  • Trimming: Regular trimming is usually not needed due to its slower growth rate. Remove old or damaged leaves to maintain its appearance and prevent decay.

Planting Tips:

  • Plant the bulb of Crinum calamistratum in the substrate, taking care not to bury the entire bulb as this can lead to rot. The top of the bulb should be visible above the substrate.
  • Ensure ample space for the plant to grow, as its leaves can spread quite wide and require room to achieve their full, graceful effect.
  • Position the plant in an area with good water flow, as this will help keep the leaves clean and free from algae while providing the movement that accentuates its flowing appearance.
