Product details

The Hydrocotyle leucocephala, commonly known as Brazilian Pennywort, is a versatile aquatic plant that is known for its round, coin-like leaves and rapid growth. Native to South America, this plant can grow submerged or emersed, making it a great choice for a wide range of aquarium styles, from traditional aquascapes to paludariums. Its bright green leaves and trailing growth habit make it ideal for creating a lush, bushy appearance, whether planted or left to float.

Key Features:

  • Round, Coin-Like Leaves: Hydrocotyle leucocephala has bright green, round leaves that resemble small coins, adding a unique texture and shape to aquascapes.
  • Rapid Growth: The plant grows quickly, making it an excellent choice for filling space, providing shade, or creating lush background cover.
  • Versatile Planting Options: It can be planted in the substrate or left to float, giving aquarists flexibility in their design. It also works well in paludariums, where it can grow emersed.
  • Easy to Care For: Brazilian Pennywort is hardy and easy to grow, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Care Requirements:

  • Lighting: Hydrocotyle leucocephala prefers medium lighting to thrive. Under good lighting conditions, the plant will grow quickly and maintain vibrant, bright green leaves.
  • CO2: CO2 supplementation is not required but will promote faster growth and larger, healthier leaves. It can thrive well in both low-tech and high-tech setups.
  • Water Parameters: This plant is adaptable and can grow well in a pH range of 6.0-7.5 and temperatures between 20-28°C. It is not fussy about water parameters and can tolerate minor fluctuations.
  • Trimming: Due to its rapid growth, regular trimming is recommended to keep it from taking over the tank. Trim back excess growth to maintain the desired shape and to encourage a bushy appearance.

Planting Tips:

  • Planting in Substrate: If planting in the substrate, insert the lower part of the stems into a nutrient-rich substrate. The plant will quickly develop roots and continue growing upward.
  • Floating: Alternatively, Brazilian Pennywort can be left to float, where it will trail across the water surface, creating shade and offering hiding spots for fish and shrimp.
  • Trimming and Propagation: Trim long stems to maintain shape and replant the cuttings if you wish to propagate. The cuttings will root easily, allowing you to quickly create new plants.
