Unlike many traditional mosses, Plagiomnium sp. ‘Thyme Moss’ develops comparatively large, bright green, slightly translucent leaves with beautifully undulating margins. Its distinctive foliage creates a rich, layered appearance, resembling miniature woodland vegetation.

Tropica describes this moss as resembling the North American species Plagiomnium cuspidatum. Its soft, spreading growth and distinctive leaf structure make it particularly attractive when combined with finer mosses, miniature ferns and other tropical plants.

Care and Maintenance

Lighting

Plagiomnium sp. ‘Thyme Moss’ thrives under low to moderate indirect lighting. Its relatively low light requirements make it suitable for shaded planting areas and enclosed tropical environments.

Avoid strong direct sunlight or excessively intense artificial lighting, which can dry out the delicate foliage and cause browning.

Humidity and Watering

High, stable humidity is essential for maintaining healthy growth. Closed or semi-closed tropical terrariums provide particularly favourable conditions.

Keep the moss and its growing surface consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged. Occasional gentle misting can help maintain moisture, particularly during establishment.

Adequate ventilation is equally important. Excessively stagnant air combined with saturated conditions may encourage mould and deterioration.

Substrate and Hardscape

Thyme Moss performs particularly well on moisture-retentive surfaces, including tropical terrarium substrates, porous rocks, driftwood and cork bark.

It can also be incorporated into moisture-retaining terrarium backgrounds to create beautifully textured vertical planting areas.

For optimal establishment, ensure the moss remains in direct contact with its growing surface and receives consistent moisture.

Trimming and Propagation

As the moss establishes, it gradually spreads to form attractive, dense green carpets.

Occasional trimming and thinning can help maintain a compact appearance and prevent excessive buildup of old growth.

Healthy portions can be divided and repositioned throughout the enclosure to encourage further coverage.

Planting Instructions

Carefully remove the moss from its Terra-2-Grow! cultivation cup.

Gently rinse away the cultivation gel using clean, lukewarm water.

Divide the moss into several smaller portions to maximise coverage.

Position the portions directly onto moist substrate, rocks, driftwood or a suitable terrarium background.

Gently press the moss against the growing surface to establish good contact.

Maintain consistently high humidity and moisture during the establishment period.

Unlike conventional terrestrial plants, mosses do not develop true roots. They attach to suitable surfaces using specialised structures called rhizoids. Avoid burying the moss too deeply, as this may restrict healthy growth.

For the most natural appearance, position small portions between rocks and around the bases of driftwood, allowing them to gradually spread and create a mature, established landscape.
