Horizon Labs Eleocharis acicularis – Tissue Culture

Eleocharis acicularis, commonly known as Dwarf Hairgrass or Needle Spikerush, is a fine-leaved, grass-like aquatic plant ideal for creating natural foregrounds and lush grassy areas in planted aquariums. Its slender green blades and spreading growth habit make it particularly effective for nature-style aquascapes, Iwagumi layouts and planted nano aquariums.

This Horizon Labs specimen is supplied as a laboratory-grown tissue culture, providing a clean and convenient way to introduce healthy young plants into your aquarium.

Plant Characteristics

Scientific name: Eleocharis acicularis
Common name: Dwarf Hairgrass / Needle Spikerush
Plant type: Rosette / grass-like carpeting plant
Placement: Foreground to midground
Growth rate: Medium
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Lighting: Moderate to high
CO₂: Recommended for best growth and carpeting
Propagation: Runners
Substrate: Nutrient-rich aquasoil recommended
Aquascaping use: Carpets, grassy foregrounds, transitions around hardscape and natural meadow effects

Growth and Aquascaping

Eleocharis acicularis produces numerous thin, upright blades that resemble fine grass. Once established, the plant spreads through the substrate by producing underground runners. New shoots emerge away from the original plant, gradually filling the surrounding area.

When planted in numerous small portions rather than large clumps, it can develop into a much more natural and even carpet.

It works beautifully around stone and driftwood, where individual blades can soften the transition between the hardscape and substrate. It can also be planted more densely across an entire foreground to produce a classic grassy aquascape.

Regular trimming can encourage a lower, denser appearance and prevent older growth from becoming overly tall.

What is a Tissue Culture Plant?

Tissue culture, also known as in-vitro cultivation, is a method of propagating plants under controlled laboratory conditions.

Small pieces of plant tissue are cultivated inside sealed containers containing a sterile, nutrient-rich growing medium. Under controlled conditions, these tissues develop into numerous genetically consistent young plantlets.

Unlike conventionally grown aquarium plants, tissue cultures are produced in an enclosed environment. This greatly reduces the risk of introducing common unwanted hitchhikers into the aquarium.

A sealed, healthy tissue culture provides several advantages:

Free from pest snails and their eggs

Produced without algae contamination under sterile culture conditions

No rockwool surrounding the roots

Numerous individual plantlets in a single cup

Excellent for newly established aquascapes

Particularly useful for shrimp and nano aquariums where unwanted hitchhikers can be problematic

How to Prepare Your Tissue Culture

Remove the lid and carefully take the plant mass out of the container.

The plants will be growing in a nutrient-rich gel. This gel is necessary during laboratory cultivation but should be thoroughly removed before the plants are introduced into the aquarium.

Place the plant mass into a container of clean aquarium or dechlorinated water and gently rinse away the culture medium. Take care when handling the young roots, as tissue-cultured plants can initially be delicate.

Once clean, gently divide the plant mass into many small portions.

For Eleocharis in particular, dividing the cup into numerous small tufts is preferable to planting the entire contents as one large clump. This gives each portion room to establish roots and allows runners to spread more evenly throughout the substrate.

How to Plant Eleocharis acicularis

Using fine aquascaping tweezers, insert each small portion into the substrate. Plant the roots deeply enough to hold the plant securely while keeping the green blades and growing points above the substrate.

Space the individual portions approximately 1–3 cm apart, depending on how quickly you would like the area to fill.

Instead of immediately having one dense clump, the plants will begin establishing roots and producing runners between the planted sections. With good conditions, these runners eventually connect the individual portions and create a much more natural-looking grassy carpet.

CO₂, Lighting and Fertilisation

Eleocharis acicularis can adapt to a range of planted aquarium conditions, but supplemental CO₂ is strongly recommended when the goal is a dense, healthy carpet.

Moderate to strong aquarium lighting, consistent CO₂ and complete plant nutrition will generally result in faster establishment and more vigorous runner production.

A quality aquasoil or nutrient-rich substrate is particularly beneficial because Eleocharis develops an extensive root and runner system beneath the substrate.

After Planting

Some adjustment after planting is completely normal. Tissue culture plants have been growing in a humid, nutrient-rich laboratory environment and must adapt to fully submerged aquarium conditions.

Initial growth may therefore be slow while the plant establishes its root system. Focus on the appearance of healthy new shoots and runners rather than expecting the plant to immediately form a carpet.

Once established, Eleocharis acicularis can become a vigorous and highly attractive foreground plant.

Maintenance

Trim established growth periodically to maintain the desired height and density. Older or damaged blades can be removed close to the substrate.

As runners spread beyond the desired planting area, they can simply be cut and removed. Healthy sections can also be separated and replanted elsewhere in the aquarium.

For the best long-term results, maintain stable lighting, CO₂ and nutrient levels and avoid sudden changes to aquarium conditions.

Horizon Labs Eleocharis acicularis Tissue Culture is an excellent choice for aquascapers looking to create a clean, natural grassland effect, soften hardscape transitions or establish a beautiful green foreground without introducing unwanted snails or other common hitchhikers.
