Horizon Labs Eleocharis montevidensis — Tissue Culture

Eleocharis montevidensis, commonly known as Giant Hairgrass, is an elegant grass-like aquatic plant prized for its long, fine green blades and natural flowing appearance. Unlike shorter carpeting Eleocharis varieties, E. montevidensis develops significantly more height, making it particularly effective as a midground or background plant or for creating tall, open meadow-like sections within an aquascape.

Under aquarium conditions, the plant typically reaches around 20–40 cm and spreads naturally through underground runners. Its narrow upright growth creates height and movement without forming a visually heavy wall of vegetation, making it excellent for adding depth around rocks, wood and other hardscape.

What is a Tissue Culture Plant?

This plant is supplied as a laboratory-grown tissue culture, also known as an in-vitro plant. Tissue culture is a propagation method where very small pieces of plant tissue are grown under controlled, sterile laboratory conditions on a nutrient-rich gel.

The sealed environment allows many young plantlets to develop without the exposure normally associated with conventionally cultivated aquarium plants. One of the major advantages is that properly produced tissue cultures are supplied free from unwanted hitchhikers such as pest snails and algae, while also avoiding rockwool and conventional potting media.

This makes tissue culture plants an excellent choice for carefully controlled planted aquariums and particularly useful for aquascapers who want to minimise the risk of introducing unwanted organisms into an established aquarium.

How to Prepare & Plant Your Tissue Culture

1. Remove the plant from the cup
Open the container and gently remove the entire mass of plantlets and culture medium.

2. Rinse away the nutrient gel
Place the plantlets in a bowl of clean aquarium or dechlorinated water and gently rinse away the culture gel from around the roots. The roots of tissue-cultured plants can be extremely delicate, so avoid pulling or scrubbing them aggressively. The nutrient medium should be removed before planting because residual gel can provide a food source for unwanted bacterial growth in the aquarium.

3. Divide into smaller portions
Do not plant the entire cup as one large clump. Carefully separate the Eleocharis into numerous smaller tufts. A single tissue culture cup can provide multiple individual planting portions. Smaller divisions establish more evenly and allow the plant to spread naturally through the substrate.

4. Plant with aquascaping tweezers
Using fine planting tweezers, insert each small portion into the aquarium substrate with the roots buried and the green blades remaining above the substrate. Space the portions apart rather than planting them tightly together.

5. Allow the plant to establish
Once established, Eleocharis montevidensis begins producing runners beneath the substrate. New shoots emerge from these runners and gradually create a natural, open grassland effect. Runners can later be trimmed, separated and replanted elsewhere in the aquascape.

Care & Growing Conditions

Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Placement: Midground to background
Growth: Medium
Height: Approximately 20–40 cm
Lighting: Low to moderate; stronger lighting can encourage more vigorous growth
CO₂: Low requirement; supplemental CO₂ is highly beneficial for stronger and faster growth
Propagation: Underground runners
Growth style: Tall, fine grass-like shoots

Eleocharis is a root-feeding plant and performs particularly well when planted into a quality nutrient-rich aquasoil. Consistent fertilisation and supplemental CO₂ can significantly improve establishment, density and runner production, although E. montevidensis is considered relatively undemanding compared with many specialist aquascaping plants.

Why Choose Tissue Culture?

Tissue cultures offer aquascapers a clean, compact and highly efficient way of introducing plants. Each cup contains numerous juvenile plantlets that can be separated across a surprisingly large planting area.

They are especially useful when establishing a new aquascape because they offer:

✓ Laboratory-grown plants
✓ No rockwool to remove
✓ Free from pest snails and unwanted hitchhikers when supplied in an intact sterile culture
✓ Free from visible algae at production
✓ Numerous plantlets per cup
✓ Easy division into multiple planting portions
✓ Excellent for shrimp and carefully controlled planted aquariums
✓ Sustainable propagation without harvesting plants from natural habitats

Some initial adjustment after planting is normal. Tissue-cultured plants have been growing under very different conditions inside their sealed container and need time to adapt to life fully submerged in the aquarium. Concentrate on healthy new growth rather than worrying about minor deterioration of older tissue immediately after planting.

Horizon Labs Eleocharis montevidensis Tissue Culture is an excellent choice for aquascapers wanting a clean source of Giant Hairgrass with the ability to create beautiful, flowing grassy backgrounds, natural transitions around hardscape and striking underwater meadow effects.
