Product details

Common Name: Clown Killifish (also known as Banded Panchax)
Scientific Name: Epiplatys annulatus
Genus: Epiplatys
Wild Origin: West Africa, primarily found in slow-moving rivers, streams, and swamps in Sierra Leone and Liberia

The Clown Killifish is a small, brightly colored freshwater fish known for its striking patterns and peaceful temperament. Males exhibit vibrant coloration with a distinct striped body and an impressive lyre-shaped tail that features bands of red, yellow, and blue. Females are more subdued in color but still maintain an elegant appearance. These tiny fish are a favorite among aquarists due to their unique looks and suitability for nano aquariums. Clown Killifish typically grow to about 1.2 inches (3 cm) and can live for 3-5 years in captivity with proper care.

Habitat and Tank Requirements:

In the wild, Clown Killifish are found in slow-moving waters with dense vegetation. To replicate their natural habitat in an aquarium, it’s important to provide a calm environment with soft, slightly acidic water and plenty of floating plants.

Tank Size and Water Parameters:

PARAMETER RECOMMENDED
Tank Size Minimum 20 litres
Temperature 72-79°F (22-26°C)
pH 5.5-7.0
Hardness Soft water, 1-8 dGH

This table provides the ideal water conditions for keeping Clown Killifish healthy. They thrive in soft, slightly acidic water and appreciate well-planted tanks with floating vegetation that mimics their natural environment.

Clown Killifish prefer a peaceful, well-planted tank with plenty of floating plants like duckweed or water lettuce to provide shade and security. A gentle filter is recommended to avoid creating strong currents, as these fish prefer calm waters. Dark substrates, such as sand or fine gravel, will help bring out their vibrant colors.

We Recommend:

These carefully selected options provide a well-balanced nutritional profile, ensuring that your fish receive the essential nutrients they need for optimal growth, vibrant colors, and overall health. By offering a variety of these high-quality foods, you can help maintain the vitality and well-being of your fish, promoting a healthy and thriving aquarium environment.

Behavior and Compatibility:

Clown Killifish are peaceful, surface-dwelling fish that do best in small groups. They are not particularly social but enjoy the company of their own species. Males may display their bright colors to attract females, but aggression is rare.

Due to their small size and peaceful nature, Clown Killifish are best kept with other small, peaceful species such as dwarf rasboras, small tetras, and pygmy Corydoras. They should not be housed with larger or aggressive fish, as they may become stressed or outcompeted for food.
